Walgreens Lithium Shipments

Create a user flows and mobile wireframes to manage lithium shipments from stores.

Considerations

  • Lithium batteries are considered a hazardous material due to fire risk

  • There are specific rules related to shipping: how much can be in a single box, and what labeling must appear outside the box.

  • We had a database that would tell us whether a combination of item(s) would qualify for a box and, if it did, what the label should be.

  • Role: UX/UI Designer

  • Others: Product Owner, Product Manager

Initial Process Flow

At first, we thought that we could simply identify the isolate the items with lithium batteries and ship them in a separate box, repeating that if necessary for additional items if there was too much lithium for one box.

After we built that out, the product team discovered that we didn’t have to isolate the lithium items, but we did have to minimize the number of boxes that were used to save on internal costs.

Final Wireframes/Flows

In our second and ultimately successful pass, assemblers still started with the lithium items, but could now add non-lithium items into the same box. This reduced shipping costs while further keeping the new process similar to the previous one, lowering friction from team members.
